Nina Cruz and Raffie Cruz
Overview
Nina Rose Cruz (née Sufuentes; born August 12, 2010) became a maternal figure to Rafael Héctor “Raffie” Cruz-Navarro when she reunited with his father, Ezra Cruz, in 2038. Raffie was three. Born Rafael Héctor Cruz in 2035, he later adopted Cruz-Navarro as a shared surname when he married Elías Navarro. Nina had first met Ezra in 2028, when she was eighteen. He held her after the 2029 Velvet Frame Lounge shooting, believing she had died; she later left to heal, though he continued to love her. Their reunion brought Nina into Raffie’s daily life as well as Ezra’s.
Nina did not try to replace Raffie’s mother, Nadia Beckford, or ask him to divide his loyalty. She became another adult he could trust and love. Raffie adores Nina and treats her “like a queen.” He calls her “Mama” and Nadia “Mami,” giving each relationship its own name. Nina expressed her commitment to him directly: “De sangre o no, you’re mine. Always.”
Raffie was seven when Nina and Ezra married in 2042. When Lia was born the following year, eight-year-old Raffie gained a sister. Nina was Raffie’s stepmother and Lia’s biological mother; she did not treat that distinction as a measure of either child’s worth. Their bond shows how Raffie could accept Nina’s love without diminishing his relationship with Nadia.
Origins
By their reunion in 2038, Nina had spent years in trauma treatment and rebuilt her professional work in dance and modeling. Ezra was thirty-two, more than three years into recovery after his Berlin overdose, and co-parenting three-year-old Raffie with Nadia. Nina understood that renewing her relationship with Ezra also meant building a relationship with his son, and she was willing to do so.
Nina approached stepmotherhood cautiously because she understood the weight of becoming important to a child and respected Nadia’s existing place in his life. She was also open to a family in which another loving adult added to Raffie’s security without displacing his mother.
When Nina first met Raffie, she did not try to win him over with gifts or display affection he had not asked for. She asked about his interests, listened, and respected his space. She did not demand a particular name or immediate acceptance. Her consistent presence gave Raffie time to learn that she cared about him and was not trying to replace Nadia.
At three, Raffie noticed the new person in Papi’s life. Nina’s confident dancing captivated him, and her gentleness with Ezra helped him feel safe. As she continued to make room for him without pressure, Raffie began seeking her company.
When Nina and Ezra married in 2042, seven-year-old Raffie was explicitly part of the family commitment the wedding formalized. Nina did not treat him as an obligation attached to Ezra; in choosing the marriage, she committed herself to Raffie as well.
Dynamics and Communication
Raffie calls Nina “Mama” and Nadia “Mami.” Nina respects the distinction: she does not ask him to rename Nadia, present herself as the more important mother, or require him to choose between them. Both women retain a genuine maternal place in his life.
Nina tells Raffie, “De sangre o no, you’re mine. Always.” Her words mean “blood or not, you’re mine” and state a lasting commitment that does not depend on his performance or gratitude. They give Raffie a secure place in her family while acknowledging that their bond was made through choice rather than biology.
Raffie sometimes falls asleep between Ezra and Nina on the couch, feeling safest with them nearby. Nina values the trust in those ordinary moments: he can relax fully in her presence without being asked to prove appreciation for her care.
Nina attends Raffie’s school activities, helps with homework, and shares family traditions without displacing Nadia. The two women coordinate schedules and important decisions respectfully. Nina does not speak negatively about Nadia to Raffie or undermine her parenting. Their cooperation keeps him from having to manage an adult loyalty conflict.
Nina celebrated Raffie’s engagement to Elías Gabriel Navarro and welcomed Elías into the family. She included him at gatherings and treated their partnership with warmth and respect. Raffie’s choice of partner could expand the family without weakening his connection to Mama.
After Raffie and Elías married and became fathers to Christian Mateo and Sebastian Gabriel Cruz-Navarro, Nina became the boys’ stepgrandmother. They were born through surrogacy with Raquel, a private family friend whose identity the family kept out of public coverage while preserving her place in the boys’ private history. Nina’s welcome for the children reflected both the family’s expansive bonds and its privacy boundaries.
Nina sometimes speaks to Raffie in Spanish, particularly in affectionate exchanges. Her Afro-Latina identity is part of the blended household, while Raffie’s Puerto Rican and Jamaican-Dominican heritage comes through Ezra, Nadia, and their extended families.
Cultural Practices and Identity
Nina is Afro-Latina and uses English and Spanish. Raffie is Puerto Rican through Ezra and Jamaican-Dominican through Nadia; he uses English, Spanish, and ASL. Their relationship formed inside a multilingual, mixed-heritage family without treating those identities as interchangeable.
Raffie’s names for “Mama” and “Mami” give each woman a distinct place in his daily life. Nina’s declaration, “De sangre o no, you’re mine. Always,” claims Raffie as her son while respecting Nadia’s maternal role.
Nina’s approach to stepmotherhood is visible in her attendance at Raffie’s activities, coordination with Nadia, welcome for Elías, and relationship with Raffie’s sons. These choices reflect her character and the co-parenting structure the adults built together rather than a single pattern attributed to Latina or Puerto Rican families.
Shared History and Milestones
The November 2038 pneumonia crisis tested Nina and Raffie’s developing trust. Three-year-old Raffie was with her when Ezra became severely ill during an upstate lodge and arcade trip. Ezra asked Nina to drive Loba, vomited on the return journey, and collapsed in the elevator of his Brooklyn apartment building. A neighbor called 911, and paramedics treated Ezra in the apartment. Nina stayed with Raffie through the emergency response, protecting and comforting him while afraid herself, then accompanied him to the hospital. Raffie saw her remain present when Papi could not respond, strengthening the bond that later made her Mama.
On the family’s spring 2043 trip to Hawaiʻi, Nina was approximately twenty-eight to thirty weeks pregnant with Lia. Ezra invited Nadia and Raffie; Nina welcomed them and prioritized a shared family memory despite the adults’ complicated history. Raffie could see Mami and Mama together without having to choose between them. A photograph of pregnant Nina with Nadia, Ezra, and Raffie circulated widely.
When Lia was born in July 2043, eight-year-old Raffie became a big brother, and Nina’s household expanded to include both children.
Nina watched Raffie protect and love infant Lia. He rejected “half-sibling” language and called her simply his sister, which made Nina proud of the security the adults had worked to give both children. Their bond did not require Raffie to compete with Lia for a place in Nina’s life.
In winter 2048, Ezra returned from tour exhausted and ill while thirteen-year-old Raffie and five-year-old Lia were home. Nina watched his breathing closely because of his 2038 pneumonia. By the following day, his coughing had worsened into another respiratory crisis while both children were present.
Nina supported Raffie’s decision to attend Berklee College of Music. She was proud of his ability to pursue an independent career after she had helped raise him from age three, but she also felt the loss of his daily presence as he built an adult life beyond their home.
For a Berklee recital, Raffie arranged a back-row seat, a quiet green room, and a place for Charlie to rest afterward. Nina was proud that he considered his disabled godfather’s access needs in advance. His planning reflected the principle the family had taught him: accommodation is a responsibility that allows full participation, rather than a favor.
Public and Private Life
Nina acknowledges her blended family publicly while protecting Raffie’s image and private life. She occasionally discusses stepfamily life in general terms. When interviews turn toward the children, she sets a firm boundary: “My children are off-limits.” She applies that protection to Raffie and Lia alike.
The widely circulated Hawaiʻi photograph made the family’s cooperation visible. Some observers praised it; others criticized a trip shared by a former partner and a new spouse. Nina did not engage with the criticism or apologize for an arrangement that met the family’s needs.
At eleven, Raffie launched the YouTube music channel R.C. Sessions while obscuring his face in early videos. Nina supported his decision to share his music without surrendering the privacy the adults had worked to protect. She celebrated his talent without turning his success into public family content.
At home, Nina cooks foods Raffie likes, remembers his preferences, and celebrates his achievements privately. She knows his patterns and moods, and he can bring her matters he may not raise with someone else. Their closeness also rests on those ordinary forms of attention.
Nina and Nadia coordinate Raffie’s needs, schedules, and important decisions. Both attend his events and put his well-being ahead of any discomfort about the adults’ history. Their cooperation is part of their practical parenting, not a performance for others.
Birthday parties, holidays, and other milestones can include both Nadia and Nina. The welcome extended to both women lets Raffie experience his family together instead of dividing his life into competing parts.
Emotional Life
Nina chose to become Raffie’s mother in daily practice after reuniting with Ezra. She does not regard the lack of a biological tie as a limit on her responsibility to him, nor does she assign him a lesser place than Lia. Her maternal commitment appears in repeated acts of presence rather than in a claim that stepmotherhood and biological motherhood are identical experiences.
Nina supported the privacy rules established after an unauthorized photograph of infant Raffie at daycare and a later attempt to film him at a trampoline park. She worked with Ezra and Nadia to protect the children’s images and locations and to limit media access to them.
Nina sometimes feels sad that she missed Raffie’s birth, infancy, and first three years, though she respects Nadia and is not jealous of her place in his life. Nina processes that sadness privately or with her best friend Elise rather than asking Raffie to carry it. Her attention returns to the years in which she has been present and the love she can continue to give him.
Raffie knows Nina as Mama, the woman who entered his life when he was three and continued to show up for him. He knows about the shooting, her separation from Ezra, and their reunion. Her presence in his life is connected to her survival and willingness to build a family after years of recovery.
Raffie treats Nina “like a queen” out of affection and respect. He values her opinion and seeks her advice. He can turn to Mama or Mami for maternal support according to his needs without treating either relationship as a betrayal of the other.
Raffie includes Nina naturally in important events, including introducing Elías to her with pride. The childhood memory of falling asleep between her and Ezra, and his adult inclusion of Mama in his life, show the continuity of a bond that never required Nadia’s erasure.
Health and Access
Raffie grew up seeing Nina manage PTSD through coping strategies, therapy, and clear communication about her needs. Her example taught him that mental health care can be continuing work, that accommodation does not imply brokenness, and that a chronic condition does not diminish someone’s worth or capacity.
The wider CRATB family included Charlie, who lived with POTS and gastroparesis; Jacob, who lived with epilepsy and other conditions; and Nina, who lived with PTSD and physical effects of the shooting. Nina helped make accommodation and access ordinary family responsibilities. Raffie’s planning for Charlie at his recital expressed values he learned from her and the broader chosen family.
Nina taught Raffie and Lia about consent and bodily autonomy while they were young. The shooting and its permanent scars made those principles personal for her. She taught both children that their bodies belonged to them, that they could decide who touched them and how, and that they could refuse unwanted touch from anyone. This gave Raffie language for boundaries and a basis for expecting respect.
Nina’s dance career also let Raffie see her train, repeat difficult movements, and work toward improvement while resting when injured and seeking treatment when needed. Her practice gave him an example of discipline joined with respect for bodily limits.
Major Events
Nina entered Raffie’s daily life in 2038, when he was three. Her place as Mama expanded his circle of trusted adults while Papi and Mami remained his parents. Nina’s respect for Nadia and attention to Raffie’s well-being helped that new relationship develop without competition.
Nina and Ezra’s 2042 marriage formalized her role as seven-year-old Raffie’s stepmother after four years of growing closeness. Lia was born the following year. For Raffie, the wedding affirmed a bond with Mama that already existed in daily life.
Lia’s birth in 2043 could have raised questions for eight-year-old Raffie about whether Mama’s biological daughter would displace him. Nina made clear that her love and responsibility toward him had not changed. Raffie saw her care for both children, and his own protective bond with Lia grew within that security.
Raffie’s departure for Berklee brought Nina pride in his talent and independence alongside sadness at the end of their daily life under one roof. She supported his choice while allowing herself to feel the change that comes when a child she helped raise leaves home.
Raffie’s engagement to Elías widened the family again. Nina welcomed his fiancé at gatherings and celebrated the partnership. Her acceptance let Raffie see that his adult commitments could grow alongside his continuing connection to Mama.
Lasting Influence
Nina’s relationship with Raffie shows the strength of a family bond built through commitment and repeated care. Her promise, “De sangre o no, you’re mine. Always,” does not erase their different biological histories. It tells Raffie that those histories do not make him less fully her child.
Nina and Nadia’s cooperation gave Raffie the security of seeing both women attend events, coordinate responsibilities, and respect each other’s roles. Their different histories with Ezra remained real, but neither woman made Raffie choose between them.
His use of “Mami” for Nadia and “Mama” for Nina preserves a distinct relationship with each mother. The names reflect the room the adults made for both maternal bonds without requiring Raffie to rank them.
Nina does not measure Raffie’s worth against Lia’s because only Lia is biologically hers. She loves, supports, and shows up for both children. Their relationships have different histories, but her care does not establish a hierarchy between them.
Raffie saw Nina practice the values she taught: access for disabled family members, pride in heritage without conflating their backgrounds, consent, bodily autonomy, and work supported by family presence. His later attention to accessibility, boundaries, and the different people in his life reflects lessons learned through her example as well as through the wider family.
Nina’s declaration, “De sangre o no, you’re mine. Always,” and her continued presence gave Raffie a secure sense of being chosen and loved. He carried that understanding into his marriage with Elías and his parenting of Christian Mateo and Sebastian Gabriel.
Nina entered Raffie’s life when he was three and remained through childhood illnesses, school struggles, adolescence, college, marriage, and fatherhood. She celebrated his accomplishments, comforted him after setbacks, and showed up without asking for recognition. Raffie, in turn, continued to claim her as Mama.
